How much does AI cost for a dev team? Complete 2026 pricing comparison
Jump to section
'How much will this cost us?' is the first question I get from CTOs. The answer isn't simple — pricing models differ and what looks cheap per-seat can be expensive in practice. Here's the current overview with concrete numbers.
Prices change fast. This overview is current as of February 2026. Always verify current prices on provider websites.
GitHub Copilot
- Individual: $10/month — basic autocomplete
- Business: $19/seat/month — admin controls, audit logs
- Enterprise: $39/seat/month — IP indemnity, code exclusion from training, SSO
For a team of 20 developers: $380-$780/month. Copilot is all-you-can-eat — no limits on completions. That's its main advantage: predictable costs. Every developer can code all day without worrying about limits.
Copilot is best for inline autocomplete — code completion in the editor. Chat and agent features are improving but aren't as strong as Claude or Cursor. Ideal as a base layer that you supplement with something stronger for reasoning.
Cursor
- Pro: $20/month per seat — 500 fast requests to premium models
- Business: $40/seat/month — 1000 fast requests, admin console, centralized billing
For a team of 20: $400-$800/month. Warning: an active user burns through 500 fast requests in 10-14 days. After that, it switches to a slower model — significantly worse quality. Business plan doubles the limit, but even 1000 requests won't last an active developer the full month.
Cursor's hidden cost: after burning through requests, developers either stop using AI (lost productivity) or buy personal API keys (uncontrolled costs). Ask yourself: what happens in the second half of the month?
Cursor is best for developers who want AI integrated directly in the editor — not as a plugin, but as a core part. Strong multi-file editing and tab-complete. Agent mode is capable but not as autonomous as CLI agents.
Claude (Anthropic)
- Pro: $20/month — basic access to Opus and Sonnet
- Team: $25/seat/month — 5x higher limits, admin console, priority access
- Enterprise: custom pricing — SSO, audit, 1M context, dedicated instances
- Max: $100/month — unlimited Opus usage including Claude Code
- Max+: $200/month — 20x higher limits vs Pro
For a team of 20: $500/month (Team) or $2000/month (Max). Max pays off for power users — unlimited Opus for $100/month is the best value on the market for active developers. Claude Code on Max plan is effectively unlimited.
Claude is strongest in reasoning, long context, and instruction following. Opus for complex tasks, Sonnet as the price/performance sweet spot, Haiku for simple quick tasks.
ChatGPT / OpenAI
- Plus: $20/month — GPT-4o, o3-mini
- Team: $25/seat/month — higher limits, admin tools
- Enterprise: custom — dedicated instances, SLA, data privacy
- API: GPT-4o $2.50/1M input tokens, o3 more expensive
For a team of 20: $500/month (Team). Enterprise adds dedicated instances and SLA. ChatGPT is a good generalist tool — strong broad knowledge base but less consistent on complex multi-step tasks than Claude.
Claude Code (CLI)
Runs on Claude API or Max subscription. With Max plan ($100/month), Claude Code is effectively unlimited — and significantly cheaper than Cursor Business for active developers. On API you pay per token — a typical developer consumes $50-150/month in tokens, but with huge variance.
# Cost comparison for 20 developers/month
Copilot Business: $380 (autocomplete only)
Cursor Pro: $400 (500 req limit/user)
Cursor Business: $800 (1000 req limit/user)
Claude Team: $500 (reasoning + code)
Claude Max (all): $2,000 (unlimited Opus)
ChatGPT Team: $500 (general purpose)
# Recommended combo for most teams:
Copilot Business + Claude Team = $880/month
= autocomplete + reasoning at a fair priceRecommendations by team size
Small teams (5-10 people)
Copilot Business + Claude Team. Copilot for autocomplete, Claude for reasoning and complex tasks. Total costs: $220-440/month. Best price/performance ratio.
Mid-size teams (10-30 people)
Copilot Business for everyone + Claude Max for 3-5 power users (senior devs, tech leads). Rest of team on Claude Team. Total costs: $800-1500/month. Power users have no limits, everyone else has enough for regular use.
Large teams (30+ people)
Consider Enterprise plans for compliance and admin tools. Copilot Enterprise + Claude Enterprise. Custom pricing, but you get SSO, audit logs, data residency, and dedicated support.
Hidden costs everyone forgets
The license cost is a fraction of total costs. The bigger items are:
- Training and onboarding — without it the license is wasted money
- Lost productivity from not using AI — one day of a senior costs $500-1500
- Time for tool selection and configuration — setting up CLAUDE.md, rules, workflows
- Administration — policy updates, usage monitoring, key rotation
Investment in proper onboarding pays back many times over. A $500/month license that saves each developer an hour daily has an ROI over 10x.
Bottom line: don't skimp on training. A company that spends $2000/month on licenses and $0 on training will get worse results than one that spends $500 on licenses and $1500 on training.
